"Plume IV: Beyond the Plume Hypothesis" (Iceland August 25th-29th, 2003)

The objective of the conference is to develop shallow-origin models for hotspot volcanism and large igneous provinces. Upper mantle tectonics, recycling and contributions to magmatism will be discussed. The meeting will bring together scientists interested in developing fundamental models for volcanic provinces, some of which have been called hotspots or large igneous provinces, and attributed to plumes. The experiments required to test them and to discrimate among alternative models will be discussed with a view to design. All aspects of Earth Science will be emphasised, including petrology, geology, geophysics, geochemistry, modeling of midplate volcanism and comparisons with plate boundary magmatism and incipient plate boundary magmatism . Some support will be available for graduate students, young scientists, and scientists from developing countries. The number of participants will be limited to 60. The number of oral presentations will also be limited, posters and extended abstracts are encouraged, and much of the meeting will be devoted to short presentations followed by debate and discussion.

Applications should be made by email to one of the conveners, and should comprise a brief statement of interests, anticipated contribution to the conference, and an extended abstract 2-4 pages in length, including illustrations, references and links as required. Preference will be given to contributions that focus on developing new ideas, and critical comparisons of alternatives. The role of the lithosphere and plates, mantle heterogeneity, dikes, small-scale convection, mantle fertility variations, heat flow and thermal considerations, physics of magma genesis and mantle dynamics, thermodynamics, and petrological constraints on extreme igneous provinces are expected to be dominant themes.

The application deadline is May 10th 2003.
