Recent Geodynamics, Georisk and Sustainable Development
in the Black Sea to Caspian Region
was held in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 3 to 6 July, 2005

The workshop organised by the IUGG GeoRisk Commission and sponsored by UNESCO, IUGG, AGU, ExxonMobil, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, and Heidelberg Academy of Sciences, brought people of natural and social sciences, policy makers and mass media representatives to analyze the problems of geohazards and risks in the Black Sea to Caspian Sea region and to prepare the social and political background for sustainable development in the region.

The major scientific goals of the workshop were (1) to understand the recent geodynamics of the region; (2) to optimize the hazard and risk sciences in combination with engineering concepts; (3) to mitigate the catastrophical impacts of geohazards on society, and (4) to raise the awareness of scientific as well as political decision makers in order to launch appropriate initiatives for the Black Sea to Caspian region in terms of disaster mitigation and preparedness of geohazards.
